S.P.A.C.E. (Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters) MISSION STATEMENT

S.P.A.C.E., the acronym for the Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters, is an exploration system and proactive research program for close encounter contact experiencers, founded in New York City in March 1992. The voluntary grassroots organization offers UFO and close encounter witnesses a chance to share openly in confidential social settings, and to explore the entire range of their interactions on the unknown frontier of contact.

This interactive project supports explorers by providing compassionate understanding, giving non-judgmental,meaningful feedback unencumbered by belief systems and preconceptions; advocates a multidisciplinary study approach from the sciences to the arts; provides public education; and offers resources for experiencers.

In our mutual search for truth, we hope to encourage contact "interfacers" towards real empowerment by overcoming fears, cultivating coping skills, nurturing the integration of the experience into their lives whenever possible, recognizing contact's transformative effects, and, for those who wish, becoming proactive "Encounter Explorers."

As interactive who willingly choose to pursue a participatory role within our encounters, we are determined to move this extraordinary experience towards breakthroughs in people's lives. We are employing ways of thinking, new terms and new tools in attempts to understand and engage that which does not conform to or fit into usual expectations and methodologies.

S.P.A.C.E. conducts regular private gatherings and public educational seminars, publishes the S.P.A.C.E  UFO EXPLORER newsletter and websites, engages in proactive field work and sky-watches (close encounters of the fifth kind), and networks and cooperates with others in this field.

S.P.A.C.E. participants have spoken at many conferences and meetings, and have been interviewed on dozens of TV and radio programs, have appeared in numerous documentaries, most recently in "The Hidden Hand: The Government UFO Government Cover-Up and Alien Abduction" by James Carman.

THE UFO EXPERIENCERS MANIFESTO by "MJ"

ONE... We're the ones having this experience.

TWO... Our experiences belong to us.

THREE... Only we know what really happened. Nobody else is in the position to "judge" us about our experiences, much less to dismiss what they do not want us to hear as fantasy, or as speculation. NOBODY ELSE IS IN A POSITION TO KNOW. There is no requirement that we give our experiences to someone else to explain them.

FOUR... We will make mistakes. That is the nature of science. Science is self-correcting -- because scientists make mistakes and correct them. We have as much right to make mistakes, to speculate when we need to, to change our theories, models and speculations when acquiring more data that shows that we need to make changes.

FIVE... We have new knowledge. New knowledge is always despised. It makes people angry, when it goes against established beliefs. Tough. Remember Galileo. The Sun was the center of the solar system, whether the church liked it or not.

SIX... We have achieved considerable empowerment by daring to own our experiences, taking responsibility for them, and by beginning to investigate and interpret them for ourselves. We are not a bunch of nuts, we are not committing any kind of religious or intellectual sin. We have every right to do what we are doing and we should continue doing it,

THE HISTORY OF OUR SUPPORT & RESEARCH PROJECT, 1992-2014

S.P.A.C.E., the initials which originally stood for Support Project for Abductees Close Encounters (a few years later changed to Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters to reflect the fuller range of the of our support and research), was launched in March 1992 in New York City by contact experiencer HAROLD EGELN. His action to create S.P.A.C.E. was provoked by an identity crisis in what he could do about his encounters, and he decided to take a reluctant leap of faith by forming a close encounter witness support group. This also came about at the urging of DR. JEAN MUNDY, the psychotherapist he worked with on accessing his experiences over a period of 25 sessions (half involving hypnosis)  from July 1988 when Budd Hopkins referred him to Mundy into 1991.

To form the group, Egeln worked with somebody from the original WHITLEY STRIEBER NYC Communion Support Group, which had two meetings in 1989 which he attended before the group, one of 20 in the country, folded. People from the Communion were contacted about S.P.A.C.E. and were given the choice of attending meetings or not, and Egeln had also remained in touch with some of Strieber's support group members. Egeln also served as a mentor to other UFO abductees who were helped by Dr, Mundy, and they were told of S.P.A.C.E., and participants of BUDD HOPKINS support group also showed an interest.

The S.P.A.C.E. Support Group first met in a midtown Manhattan office of a UFO experiencer with 16 people from the mix described here. The group held monthly meetings throughout the 1990's into 2000-2001, and often had anywhere from 20 to 40 people per session. Over time, a cumulative total of 500 UFO contact witnesses attended these meetings, while dozens of others preferred the "buddy support system" meeting incoffee shops and cafes with Egeln and maybe a few others.

In the early 2000's, S.P.A.C.E. held at least six open public education seminars with speakers such as PETER ROBBINS (twice), JOYCE MURPHY, EUGENIA MACER-STORY and others, including performers and producers of COLLISION THEORY. The later produced a dance, music and dramatic play called "THE ABDUCTION PROJECT" with over a dozen performances in February 2001 at the HERE Art Center in Soho. The play was created by staff and performers interviewing UFO experiencers from S.P.A.C.E., Budd Hopkins group and Dr. John Mack;s group to get an accurate sense of our experiences, respect us, and integrate them into a performance venue, which Collision Theory. The play was again performed at a southern California university, attended by members of the famous Jet Propulsion Laboratory, mission control to most of NASA's space probes.

In its early years, S.P.A.C.E. held two experiencer-only events at performance venues in Manhattan's East Village, where experiencers used their create talents (music, poetry, etc.) to articulate their close encounters in a creative form. S.P.A.C.E. also held a public screening of original UFO movies in a firehouse-converted into a theater in the East Village. S.P.A.C.E. participant and experiencer CAROLYN BARNES, one of the key creators of S.P.A.C.E, experimented with our first cable TV series, "S.P.A.C.E.-BRIDGE" with four episodes broadcast on the Manhattan Public Access Network.

S.P.A.C.E. in the 1990;s had a vigorous proactive component with the S.P.A.C.E. AWAY TEAMS of experiencers and supporters who frequently took field trips to the Brewster UFO hot-spot in rural Putnam County in upstate New York, 100 miles north of NYC. These CE-5's (Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind) late night excursions involved UFO-NL (nocturnal lights) sightings, some of which were interactive with the UFO-NL's responding to our presence and overtures. There were several entity sightings that team members had, as well as other non-ordinary experiences. These will be more fully described on our BREWSTER, NY webpage.

A monthly, later a quarterly, S.P.A.C.E. NEWSLETTER print edition was published by us from our start in March 1992 into 2000. It became part of our original S.P.A.C.E. WEBSITE, online from November 1999 to September 2013 when our host MSN Web TV service ceased operations to all its customers, leaving us without a website for nine months. The original S.P.A.C.E. had reams of information, experiencer accounts, resources and a S.P.A.C.E. e-book, so much so that it expanded into 15 additional S.P.A.C.E. websites.

Our new S.P.A.C.E. website went online on June 30, 2014, and is presently still under construction. Although many people were alerted to its publication, a few handfuls of people have visited our new site and less than a handful have visited just a couple of our webpages. At least that is the reality so far at this early stage of the re-birth of the S.P.A.C.E. cyberspace presence on the Internet after a long absence. Spread the word that we're back, if you can! When we are able and have  the sufficient practical resources, we will go onto the main search engines such as Google and Bing to reach, once again like before with our first S.P.A.C.E. websites, a much wider audience of interest.

This page's intro photo is of the original S.P.A.C.E. website's homepage. Our first website was on line from Nov. 22, 1999 until Oct. 1, 2013, and it spawned 15 additional sites due to ever-increasing amounts of information

The photo below is of the late DR. JEAN MUNDY, the NYC psychotherapist who helped counsel many close encounter experiencers and employed hypnosis to uncover hidden memories. She referred several people to the S.P.A.C.E. Group and when working with Harold Egeln in the three years prior to S.P.A.C.E. start-up, arranged for him to meet, in a listening role, other experiencers with whom she was working. "I don't want them to feel that they are alone with their experiences, so I asked a fellow abductee like Harold to listen to them," she explained.

For 20 years she was a staff counselor at the former St. Vincent Hospital's mental health department in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. She had her own practice in her apartment on West. 13th Street in Greenwich Village, and upon retirement moved to Long Island.

Around 1990 Dr. Mundy wrote a play about a family dealing with UFO alien abduction, called "BELIEVE ME!" There was a stage reading first and a single full performance at the Village Gate in 1993 as part of a UFO conference organized by MICHAEL LUCKMAN of the NYC Center for Extraterrestrial Research.

She was attracted to the UFO alien abduction field after attending a mental health professional's conference in the mid-1990's. "I heard somebody screaming and sobbing behind close doors," she said. "It turned out to be a tape recording of BETTY and BARNEY HILL when DR. BENJAMIN SIMON was working on their case bavk in the early Sixties." [There is a full recording of that session on a YouTube item below/]

The photo shown below was Dr. Mundy's favorite and is shown here in the "UFO UNIVERSE" magazine of June-July 1991 in a review written by HAROLD EGELN, almost a year before S.P.A.C.E. was launched..P.She spoke at several UFO topic meetings and at the 1989 OMEGA UFO EXPERIENCE Conference, part of a series organized by author and book agent JOHN WHITE, in North Haven, Connecticut. She wrote an article on UFO Dreams in "UFO MAGAZINE" in the early 1990's. This new S.P.A.C.E. website is dedicated to her and JOSEPH WIEK, a UFO experiencer who was editor of the "S.P.A.C.E. EXPLORER NEWSLETTER" print editions for nearly seven years.

The article by DR. JEAN MUNDY below appeared in the "S.P.A.C.E. NEWSLETTER" February 1995 - Issue #36.

The two most influential people who made it possible for HAROLD EGELN to create and start S.P.A.C.E.  were DR. JEAN MUNDY,through Egeln's work with her, and WHITLEY STRIEBER, both for his inspiration and for experiencers from his NYC Communion Network Support Group who agreed to attend S.P.A.C.E. meetings.

Brief and succinct comments by a few of the hundreds of close encounter experiencers participating in S.P.A.C.E. commenting on their abductions and contacts are posted below in the section "S.P.A.C.E. ENCOUNTER EXPLORERS SPEAK OUT" published in the original main S.P.A.C.E. website, along with the front page of the Summer 1999 "S.P.A.C.E. EXPLORER" newsletter print issue at the bottom. Many experiencers wrote their very own articles, columns and even poems and illustrations in our print and online newsletters. Also, immediately below are photos of the original S.P.A.C.E.-Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters brochure. The first photo displays the front page 1 (on your right) and page 5 and 6 (on your left and middle - the sixth page had the original contact information in the blank spot). In the second photo are pages 2, 3 and 4.

Also pictured below is ROBERTA PULHALSKI, a S.P.A.C.E. participant and experiencer from Connecticut who was the S.P.A.C.E. EXPLORER newsletter's "Pensacola Beach Lady"columnist. In 1999 she moved to Georgia when and where she founded the S.P.A.C.E. SOUTH support and research group. When sje moved to Florida, she continued S.P.A.C.E. SOUTH there as its facilitator and researcher. The photo was taken in February 1992 at a NYC psycho-tronics group meeting on Manhattan's Upper West Side led by CLARENCE ROBBINS. Pulhalski, a Mensa meber, spoke on UFO experiences, hers and in general.

Also shown are brochure pages of the first UFO/ABDUCTION CONFERENCE held by the BUDD HOPKINS INTRUDERS FOUNDATION (IF) in June 1999, attended by several S.P.A.C.E. participants. The second IF conference was held in May 2000 at the city's Hall of Science in Flushing Meadow Park in Queens, and speakers then included Dr. John Mack and Nick Pope.

Below there is a photo album of a few of the many attendees and participants talking about a S.P.A.C.E. Experiencers Panel, after the session was over, held at the large UFO CONFERENCE EAST in November 1993 in midtown Manhattan that attracted hundreds of people. A second UFO CONFERENCE EAST was held in November 1994 at which S.P.A.C.E. also had a panel speaking again to a packed room.

Among other posts from the original S.P.A.C.E. websites below are: "Close Encounters From S.P.A.C.E. At The Flying Saucer Cafe" about a S.P.A.C.E. UFO Experiencers Public Seminar at the cafe in Brooklyn on November 19, 2000; "S.P.A.C.E. & Irish UFO Organization Connect" S.P.A.C.E. Ambassador Visits Dublin"about S.P.A.C.E. participant LORIE BARNES' stop-over, while on a vacation in Ireland, with leaders of the Irish UFO and Paranormak Research Association (IUFOPRA) in Dublin; and "Encounter Witnesses: Up Close and Personal" about a photo-shoot, arranged in NYC in early 1999 for photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders taken of S.P.A.C.E. experiencers that was to appear in "LIFE Magazine," but instead appeared in a new magazine "(t)here" in its Summer 1999 issue under the title "Beyond the Beyond" with photos of other UFO experiencers around the country.

There is a photo below of the S.P.A.C.E. PANEL  at the "UFO CONFERENCE EAST" held in Manhattan November 20-21, 1993 with experiencer panelists CHRIS MORCIGLO, JOSPEH WIEK and HAROLD EGELN. Morciglio wrote a series of articles on "Close Encounters of the Dream Kind" in the S.P.A.C.E. NEWSLETTER print edition in the 1990's. WIEK served as the newsletter editor of the print editions from early 1993 through 1999. The Summer 1999 issue is shown below his photo. Wiek died suddenly in May 2006 at age 41, and was born in Seattle, Washington on July 29, 1964.This new S.P.A.C.E. website is dedicated to him and DR. JEAN MUNDY, who first suggested to Egeln to form a support group.

There is also a leaflet about the "Spacial Relationships: The UFO Experience" multimedia event in September 1996 by NYC UFO event and conference organizer MICHAEL LUCKMAN, author of "Alien Rock: The Rock 'N Roll Extraterrestrial Connection" as well as founder of the NY Center for Extraterrestrial Research and Cosmic Majority.com. BUDD HOPKINS and S.P.A.C.E. participated in the one-month event launched at the Hudson Bar & Grill in Soho.

The brochure at the top was the complete second S.P.A.C.E. brochure and the one below shows the first three of six pages of the first S.P.A.C.E. brochure.

"The S.P.A.C.E. Group is one of the very few groups of close encounter witnesses who have had shared encounters. Their website contains a record of what has happened to them, and offers other witnesses in the New York area an opportunity to participate in their group. They have been together for many years. They also offer a quarterly newsletter that I have been reading since its inception. It's always informative and a pleasure to read." -- WHITLEY STRIEBER, a quote dated May 15, 2000, for a link to our original S.P.A.C.E. website on his "WHITLEY'S WORLD" website, the predecessor to"Whitley Strieber's Unknown Country" website.

In 1993 two S.P.A.C.E. participants, one a UFO contact experiencer, made a special trip to Gulf Breeze, Florida, near Pensacola and Elgin Air Force Base to investigate, and possible witness, one of then famous Gulf Breeze UFOs, made famous by Ed Walters and other witnesses from 1987 into the 1990's. They did not see any UFOs but brought back a report on the UFO hot spot.

Below is a photo of ROBERTA PULHALSKI taken at a NYC psychotronics meeting in 1992, hosted by CLARENCE ROBBINS, where she spoke for the first time in public about her close encounters with UFO occupants. A MENSA member then active with Connecticut MUFON and with Hudson Valley stone chamber investigations with HAROLD EGELN and others, she later founded S.P.A.C.E. SOUTH in 1999 when she moved to Georgia and then to Florida. Egeln was also due to speak out for the first time at the meeting, but pulled out at the last minute preferring to listen to Puhalski.

The next month, inspired by her brave public talk, his own identity crisis sparked by what he could do with his own close encounter experiences and his relationship with UFO occupants, and dealing with the distress of his unjust job loss 10 days before Christmas 1991 beginning a one-year experience of unemployment, he decided in early February 1992 to form S.P.A.C.E., then standing for the Support Project for Abductees Close Encounters.

The first meeting was on March 25, 1992, in the midtown Manhattan office of UFO contact ZE'EV KOLMAN, with WHITLEY STRIEBER among the attendees from his work with DR. JEAN MUNDY and Strieber's former NYC Communion Group in 1989. The month before, Egeln also became an environmental columnist (an ideal opportunity!) for an alternative, counterculture biweekly newspaper, with his biweekly "ECO FRONTIER" column on all sorts of aspects of environmental issues, dangers and solutions, an endeavor that lasted a full three years and which almost resulted in a book of his columns by Bantam Books, an offer with an interested editor at Bantam in 1993 that he avoid due to his one of his occasionalperiods of low self-esteem ("me, an author? -- impossible, given my mediocre writing skills, and the book will have no readers!"), a lifelong chronic condition based on being put down and bullying by mean people.

The S.P.A.C.E. NEWSLETTER of December 1995 featured a front page article on "CONSCIOUSNESS" by PAT MADDEN SULLIVAN, then a retired teacher who was working on her Ph.D. in Consciousness Psychology. She ran a extraterrestrial contact support group in her home state of Pennsylvania. Consciousness and its relationship to the close encounter experience has been a prime issue since the founding of S.P.A.C.E. in 1992. Our "SYNCHRONICITY & UFOs: Quantum Mind in UFO Cosmology" webpage expands on this subject.

Photo album below are pictures of the S.P.A.C.E. Panel Workshop at the UFO EXPO EAST Conference held in NYC in November 1993. S.P.A.C.E. held another panel workshop at the second expo a year later in November 1994 at the Hotel Roosevelt. Both discussions were held in fully packed rooms, with standees, too. To enlarge photos, click first picture and "NEXT" prompts on the right side of the photos will guide you through the series.

Below is an announcement about a S.P.A.C.E. seminar, part two of our First S.P.A.C.E. EXPLORERS 2001 MINI-CONFERENCE held on April 1, 2001 at the Source of Life Conference Center, just next to the Empire State Building. The seminar was a roundtable discussion with the producers and players of "THE ABDUCTION PROJECT" play by the Collision Theory Performance Company, based in Brooklyn. There is more information on the play elsewhere on the S.P.A.C.E. website. The first seminar was presented by New Yorkufologist and author PETER ROBBINS on "UFOCity.com & Beyond."

The seminar, as were all S.P.A.C.E. Public Seminars, was videotaped, and we plan to transfer the videos to DVDs and show them on our website. The play was performed on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings from February 24 through March 17, 2001 at the HERE Arts Center in Soho, Manhattan.

"About this production: As with each of Collision Theory's previous productions, THE ABDUCTION PROJECT is based in part on interviews. In this instance, we conducted extensive interviews with individuals who either reported having experienced extraterrestrial experiences or have extensive knowledge on this subject.

"Interviewees: Anonymous (1), Dave Brody (S.P.A.C.E..com), Harold Egeln, Ed Martin, Meryl Johnson, Alan White (all from S.P.A.C.E.), Will Buche, Karin Austin (both from PEER- the Program for Extraordinary Experience Research founded by Dr. John Mack), and Budd Hopkins and Randall Nickerson (of Budd Hopkins' Intruders Foundation-IF). Special thanks to S.P.A.C.E., PEER and IF for their research, support and insights on this topic."

The public film event described below involved S.P.A.C.E. participant CAROLYN BARNES in its planning.

The above central photo is of S.P.A.C.E. participants from the "(t)here" photo magazine from 1999, as reported in the article in both the "S.P.A.C.E. EXPLORER" print Summer 2000 newsletter above and in our online edition below. The only mistake in the caption, by WHITLEY STRIEBER, was his incorrect description as to the Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters being "a small organization" is totally wrong. Over 500 UFO close encounter witnesses participated in S.P.A.C.E. from 1992 to 2000, and our monthly support and group study meetings averaged three dozen or more people many times in private apartment gatherings. However, we very much appreciate Strieber, a pioneering contact witness who courageously spoke out about his enigmatic experiences implicated online. There were 72 print editions of the S.P.A.C.E. newsletter, the last in early 2001.

The book below, "ENCOUNTERS: A Psychologist Reveals Case Studies of Abductions by Extraterrestrials" by DE. EDITH FIORE (Ballintine Books, NY, 1989) was instrumental in directing UFO contact witnesses to S.P.A.C.E. in our first few years. It contained a list of 26 "hypnotherapists working with Abductees/Contactees" which included DR. JEAN MUNDY of NYC, with whom Egeln first worked with  in 1988. People who read DR. FIORE's contacted DR. MUNDY for help, and she also also referred them toS.P.A.C.E.
