The first motion movie to depict fictional space aliens was the classic 1902 "TRIP TO THE MOON" French movie by pioneering movie maker George Melies (subject of Martin Scorese's recent "Hugo" movie) based on the science fiction story by Jules Verne. The full movie is shown below. The first sci-fi flying saucer movie to depict a space alien with a large head and big eyes, before the image was popularized in the 1970's through UFO occupant contact witness reports was the 1951 movie "THE MAN FROM PLANET X," Its movie trailer can be watched below. Above, legendary late night talk show host LONG JOHN NEBEL presents "THE FLYING SAUCER STORY" culled from his years of interviews of over 50 years ago in NYC on the WOR-AM radio station. After the movie below is an historic audio recording of NYC resident, journalist and Fortean author JOHN KEEL presenting a talk on MOTHMAN in 1966 at a UFO conference. This webpage features material from the vast S.P.A.C.E. archives of both materials about the Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters and related material outside of S.P.A.C.E. There is also archival material throughout this website featured on individual topic webpages relating to their subjects.
The S.P.A.C.E. ARCHIVES webpage will post, from time to time, selected articles and items from our original S.P.A.C.E. websites (16 extensive sites in all from 1999 to 2013), our print S.P.A.C.E. NEWSLETTERS (1992-2000) and other sources. These include historical UFO public YouTube videos on the range of the UFO close encounter experience, some controversial even among ufologists but that are part of the historical record provided by these historical archives, with S.P.A.C.E. founder HAROLD EGELN steeped in his role as a UFO historian, tracking the development of ufology since he was a little boy in the early 1950's. History was his college major.
Posted here is the "INTRUDERS FOUNDATION SEMINAR ON THE ALLAGASH ABDUCTIONS" article by HAROLD EGELN from our "S.P.A.C.E. Explorer" on-line newsletter of OCTOBER 2000. This Intruders Foundation seminar, hosted by BUDD HOPKINS, featured a presentation by Allagash, Maine UFO abductee CHARLES FOLTZ, whose experience with three other men in August 1996 was documented in RAYMOND FOWLER's book "The Allagash Abductions: Undeniable Evidence of Alien Intervention" with an introduction by Hopkins (Wild Flower Press, 1993). The seminar report was posted on the former UFOCITY.com website by Editor PETER ROBBINS, who also at the time had a column in "UFO MAGAZINE" on UFO topic websites, which he reviewed.A video is included here.
Our own S.P.A.C.E. archives consist of many, many hundreds of articles and items, plus our 50-chapter e-book., so only some selected items will appear here.
Pictured below, after the videos, is the front page of the "P.E.E.R. PERSPECTIVES" bulletin of Winter 1998 from DR. JOHN MACK's Program for Extraordinary Experiences Research (P.E.E.R.). Dr. Mack was a supporter of S.P.A.C.E. and a friend of Harold Egeln's work with other experiencers and it was Dr. Mack that Egeln confided in the most and at the deepest levels of his contact experiences. Dr. Mack spoke at S.P.A.C.E. support group meeting in early 1995 with over 60 experiencers attending. The John E. Mack Institute [www.jemi.org] continues Dr. Mack's work.
PHOTO ALBUM OF UFO BOOKS OF THE 1950's & 1960's
AND UFOLOLOGY INFORMATION TREASURES LOST & FOUND
The photo album above is a selection of UFO books from the 1950's and 1960's from HAROLD EGELN's "S.P.A.C.E. UFO LIBRARY," an extensive literature archive collection. This is a Ufology information treasure chest.
Many of the above earliest books (early to middle 1950's) were gifts from his parents, or replacements Egeln bought much later after his UFO book collection was thrown into the garbage and destroyed in 1957 (aka Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451" and Wilhiem Reich) when he was a boy and forbidden by school authorities to ever again have an interest in astronomy, space and UFOs. That was the educational system's punishment for Egeln for reporting his two UFO sightings, without embellishment, at that time which stirred up interest from younger curious schoolmates who had been following his after-school, nighttime observation reports of stars and planets, a rogue astronomy class in the schoolyard. Boy amateur home astronomer Egeln had set his career goal as a professional astronomer and space author, but it was derailed because of a negative response to his astronomy and UFO interest. .
Most of the books from the 1960's shown here he bought as a teen and young adult. Since then hundreds, perhaps thousands, of UFO books have been published.
THE 1992 UFO ROPER POLL ON U.S.PUBLIC UFO EXPERIENCE
Shown below is the cover of "UNUSUAL PERSONAL EXPERIENCES" which was the report title from a poll of nearly 4,947 U.S. residents conducted by the Roper Organization, published by the Robert "Bigelow Holding Corporation" in Nevada in 1992. The "Report on Unusual Experiences Associated with UFO Abductions" was :an analysis of the data from three national surveys" an was mailed to "100,000 psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals."
There are commentaries in the report by DR.JOHN MACK, BUDD HOPKINS, DAVID MICHAEL JACOBS, RON WESTRUM, and JOHN CARPENTER, with an Afterword by ROBERT BIGELOW. HOPKINS< JACOBS and WESTRUM commentary, an abstract, was titled "THE UFO ABDUCTION SYNDROME." Information on this important report suggesting that a large number of Americans have had direct UFO occupant close encounters can be found online.
SCIENCE FICTION UFO MOVIES PHOTO ALBUM
In the photo album below are selected science fiction movies with a UFO theme from the 1950's, with two exception. They are from Harold Egeln's SPACE Movie Library, which has a great many more. As a boy, he first saw these Fifties movies were they were released. Egeln, a UFO close encounter hstorian, could write a book about UFO movies from an experiencers POV.
The movies, in order on the first row, date from 1953 [Invaders From Mars, with space alien implants in humans], 1950 [The Man From Planet X, where an alien from Planet X kidnaps and mind-controls humans as his slaves], 1951 [The Day the Earth Stood Still - the grandest of them all], 1952 [Red Planet Mars, the first alien disclosure movie, with the Martians announcement that they use free energy, a message that destroys the world's coal-based economy] and 1954 [Stranger From Venus, a story by Desmond Leslie, co-author with George Adamski of "Flying Saucers Have Landed" in a movie with a human Venusian and anti-gravity flying saucer and space mother-ship].
And in the second row, from 1974 [Fantastic Planet about humans abducted to an alien planet to become pets], 1955 [This Island Earth, about the kidnapping of Earth's top scientists to save a war-weary alien planet], 1964 [First Men on the Moon, about a 1900 trip to the Moon, likely the basis for secret Moon landing programs since], 1956 [Earth Versus the Flying Saucers, where a misunderstood alien message results in war and the first UFO landing on the White House lawn] and 1953 [War of the Worlds, H.G. Well's famous 1898 science fiction story of a Martian invasion].
The images below are from movie VHS and DVD covers, and movie posters in HAROLD EGELN'S extensive SPACE MOVIES & POSTERS LIBRARY.
THE "BELIEVE ME!" UFO CLOSE ENCOUNTER PLAY BY DR. JEAN MUNDY
The "UFO UNIVERSE" magazine pages in the June-July 1991 issue below have a review by HAROLD EGELN,in the year before S.P.A.C.E. was founded, of the UFO experience play "BELIEVE ME!" by DR. JEAN MUNDY, a pyschotherapist who worked with UFO close encounter witnesses, including in 25 sessions with Egeln, in the late 1980's and early 1990's apart from her regular practice in Greenwich, NYC. This was the FIRST and ONLY time that an article by Egeln appeared in any UFO magazine, which is unusual because he is a professional newspaper journalist as well as founder, with other contact witnesses, of the S.P.A.C.E. Group.
Dr. Mundy's excellent play had one stage reading and only one live performance, in 1993, at a UFO conference at the Village Gate in NYC, organized by UFO researcher MICHAEL LUCKMAN. She contributed a chapter to a book in 1995 titled "OUT OF THE BODY: Back in Five Minutes."
